Gothic Era

Gothic building started being made in Germany in about 1230, an example of this is Liebfrauenkirche, a German church. Unfortunately bombing raids in November 1944 destroyed many buildings from this period. A subseries of gothic is brick gothic, which uses mostly brick. An example of brick gothic is Stralsund City Hall. Houses in this period were mainly timber-framed buildings. The picture is of Cologne Cathedral.
The Koelner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) is a truly awesome building. It is huge, to make you feel the presence of God above you. You can see it throughout Koeln (Cologne). When I visited it still had a WWII bunker in one corner, placed there because the Dom was recognized as an historic monument that was not to be bombed. I'd love to take Laurel there...maybe on our next German trip!
